We met for champagne in the Brumus Bar before the main event of the evening. The atmosphere amongst us was one of excited trepidation. We had gathered to watch the third performance of the new musical Marguerite. None of us had heard or read any reviews about it so we weren’t sure what to expect.

We were handed our programmes before making our way to the theatre and taking our seats. The auditorium was full. Being only the third performance there were obviously still a few gremlins in the wings as the show was ten minutes late starting. But as the lights dimmed, silence fell across the audience.

The opening scene was very solemn and the story unfolded and moved quickly. Marguerite (Ruthie Henshall) is the French mistress of a high-ranking German officer in Nazi-occupied Paris. She is very popular because she can get petrol coupons and nylons and so forth. But at her fortieth birthday party she meets musician Armand (Julian Ovenden) who falls hopelessly in love with her. The musical follows their secret affair and the ensuing tragedy.

Unlike other musicals, Marguerite is not full of high octane dance numbers. It is altogether far more solemn and intense. By the time the interval came we all felt quite emotionally drained and were pleased to be escorted down to the stalls bar where champagne and a lovely selection of sandwiches were waiting for us.

‘So much to do and so little time to do it in’, is that something you hear yourself saying? Well, according to Phil Redmond of the Liverpool Daily Post it is a cry that is increasingly common to hear. It is great to know that our culture is so rich and varied that there is so much going on to keep us all entertained.

But what’s that? You are struggling to find something interesting to do? There is nothing out there to suit your tastes or when you do hear about something it is too late? Now some people would say that you are not trying hard enough. But in today’s hectic world of work, work, work, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with the latest exhibitions, shows etc. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if there was a list of stylish VIP experiences that you could browse through at your convenience?  Events that you could just book turn up on the day and have a fantastic time with like-minded people?

What would be on your event wish list? How about  a Walking tour of Greenwich with Architect, Ken Allinson, or a Buckingham Palace Tour & dine at Mosimann’s or perhaps you’d Enjoy an Exclusive and Memorable Lunch 125 metres above Paris? Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting that you have to organise any of these yourself. There is no need. You could enjoy London’s most exclusive social events calender simply by becoming a member of

The SaVVy Club®.  Never again would you feel as though you were missing out.

What would be your ideal VIP experience for you or your partner?

No matter whether it is your first, tenth, twenty-fifth or sixtieth wedding anniversary, it should always be celebrated in style.

So what type of gift-giver are you? Are you the type of person who is reminded of the impending occasion by a ping on your computer, bleep of your mobile phone diary or a shout from your Secretary?  If so, would it be true to say that the amount of thought that goes into the gift is minimal? Perhaps a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers grabbed from the nearest petrol station?

Maybe you are the type of person who always remembers important dates and plans accordingly – a romantic meal at a top 5 star restaurant, a weekend away at an exclusive hotel or spa?

Now, if you fall into the first category but would love to promote yourself to the second, here’s what you do:

  1. You choose the perfect night out that your partner will enjoy.  Ballet, theatre, a musical or the opera?
  2. You book tickets at least a month or two in advance, to ensure the best seats are available – private boxes, circle and stalls usually sell out first!
  3. You make a restaurant reservation – note: some exclusive restaurants like The Ivy or Gordon Ramsay’s take reservations 3 to 6 months in advance
  4. Phone the venue to ask what time the show finishes.  Organise a chauffeur car to meet you afterwards
  5. On the night, arrive before your partner to buy the programme to avoid the queue, rush and crowd.  Present it to your partner as you take your seats
  6. Before you take your seats, pre-order your interval champagne at the bar to avoid wasting time in the queue during the interval – agree with them exactly where they will put it, so that you can find it easily

I can hear you all shouting “But how is all this achievable? I don’t have the time to organise something like that!”   Maybe you don’t, but The SaVVy Club® does!

Need more ideas? How about something like A Day at Royal Ascot, an Opera evening at Glyndebourne, a gourmet weekend on the Côte d’Azur, or perhaps a Gourmet experience with a well known Chef?

How would you like a plethora of stylish, memorable and exclusive VIP experiences at your finger tips? Never again will you be struggling to think of something new and exciting to amaze your loved one with. You will astound them with your imagination and always be sure to impress.

Carnival!

There is something about summer, heat, and holidays that makes people want to dress up in weird and wonderful costumes, scream ‘aaaiiiiiieeeeee!’ from the top of their voices all whilst dancing around on garishly decorated lorry trailers. No, its not City bonus day – its carnival season! We have all seen pictures of the wonderful events in Rio and our very own Notting Hill – the colour, the excitement, the energy, the atmosphere…there is just something about a carnival that sets everyone in a good mood. It’s a time to let your hair down and party like you’ve never partied before.

Now, (here’s the very short history lesson) the tradition of carnivals originally came from the urge to have as big a party as possible before the Lent fasting began. Which leads us very nicely to the subject of food; think of a carnival and you’ll think of costumes and dancing and everyone having a wonderful time and, most of all, huge amounts of fun. But that usually means that the food available is fun too.

No room for limp lettuce and its fellow salad partners with low fat mayonnaise.Oh no, we are talking cholesterol city – sky-scraping burgers and hot dogs. Basically it is the food every waist-line has nightmares about.  So how on earth are we meant to stay slim and party? Well, here are a few hints that may just help. Why not try substituting the burgers for a light sandwich which will contain far less fat and a shed-load less calories.

Also avert your eyes when presented with displays of sugary deserts and ice cream; if you can’t see them, you can’t be tempted by them. Whatever you do, don’t forget the hidden calories in drinks too. Instead of alcohol or fizzy drinks, have water or even that British favourite – a nice cup of tea (without sugar, obviously).

Follow these tips and you will party and still remain slender, virtuous, incredibly self conscious and sober. Of course, the other option is to totally ignore all advice, eat, drink and be merry whilst dancing furiously in a style that your father would be proud of and you’ll burn off so many calories you will probably end up slimmer than when you started! Marvellous, I know which option I prefer.

Perhaps you know of an even better method of surviving the carnival season. Do you have any handy hints, tips or even stories that you would like to share with one and all? Go on; spread a little happiness especially for those of us unfortunate enough not to have been caught up in the party atmosphere.
