Do you have a wish list? A series of things that you feel you must do or experience in your life time? Many people just don’t have the time to make their dreams and desires happen, and that was one of the driving forces behind the creation of The SaVVy Club®. I believe in living life to the full and making every moment count; life is too short not to.  I One never knows what is lurking around the corner, which is why it’s important to seize opportunities when they happen.  When my time comes, I don’t want to have any regrets.

Here’s my wish list – my top 20 life goals:

  1. Visit at least five of the Seven Wonders of the World – so far I’ve only been to Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal.
  2. After learning about the death of Charlton Heston recently, I want to watch the top 50 Academy award winning movies.
  3. Experience the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
  4. Sponsor the education of a child in the 3rd world
  5. Take a hot air balloon ride (and drink champagne) over the Serengeti
  6. Fly to the moon and experience weightlessness
  7. Experience the Rio Carnival
  8. Send my husband the message ‘I love you’ by skywriting
  9. Win the National Lottery Rollover whilst I’m still relatively young and able to enjoy it
  10. Follow in the footsteps of my late godmother, Roshan Sadri by starting my own Charity to help disadvantaged children.
  11. Learn to cook ‘real’ food like Delia Smith
  12. Experience giving birth and breast feeding
  13. Save someone’s life by mouth to mouth resuscitation
  14. Find a long lost friend called ‘Lorraine Miller’, who used to live in Naphill.
  15. Expand The SaVVy Club® into every continent around the world
  16. Organise a memorable social event for The Royal Family
  17. Discover a new gem stone and name it “kimite” (after myself, of course)
  18. Meet and shake hands with Nelson Mandela
  19. Win an award for innovation
  20. Organise a massive party to celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary

I have been challenged by Andy Lopata, one of the UK‘s leading Business Networking Strategists, to tell readers of this blog eight random things about myself. Now here’s your chance to find out more about me.

  1. I was adopted at 3 weeks old – my birth name was Ruby.
  2. When I was young, I aspired to be a famous opera singer – I sang on stage in front of 2,000 people at Club Med in France and sang with the Royal Philharmonia Chorus at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
  3. I used to work on a battery hen farm collecting eggs, despite being allergic to eggs and not being able to stand the smell!
  4. I’ve para-glided off the South Downs, scuba-dived off the Great Barrier Reef, swam with sharks, climbed Ayers Rock and Ben Nevis, but I can’t bring myself to do a bungee jump!
  5. I played the role of a rat in the Dick Whittington pantomime staged in the West End of London.
  6. Nominated by Independent Adoption Society, I gave Princess Alexandra a bouquet of flowers at the premier screening of Jaws in 1975.
  7. I collect genuine gem stones.  My favourite is Alexandrite – one of the world’s most coveted gemstones. Legend has it that Alexandrite has the ability to aid creativity and inspire imagination.
  8. I make a mean Thai curry.

Social networking, much like business networking, is a phrase which often leads to raised eyebrows on the part of people hearing about/experiencing someone engaged in it.  It is also, however, a phenomenon that is growing in popularity.

The reasons for this popularity are not easily listable, but probably stem from the fact that people are increasingly busy with their careers, and are also often living in big cities where the sense of community we used to count on no longer exists.  It is unlikely now that you know your local butcher/baker/candlestick maker and their families, but we all still feel the need to reach out and make friends.

Another factor to consider is that social and business networking are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although many people maintain that they should be.  I, however, am one of those who maintain the opposite: they should be intertwined, for the very reasons that make both forms of networking so reviled in some sectors.

Networking is not, or rather, should not be, a purely selfish attempt to bulk up one’s address book.  Rather, it should be a genuine reaching-out to people with similar interests, and is therefore inherently mutual.  That is, the people who come to events, conferences and so forth with the express purpose of “networking” are invariably those who get none done.  Why?  They are the people who’re easy to spot: the shifty eyes, the obvious half-paid attention to conversation while they scan the room for someone who may be more useful to them.

Rather, networking is simply about reaching out to those around you – never expect someone to do you a favour, but be willing to help out anyone you can – you’d be amazed at how small acts of kindness are rewarded later, although not necessarily by the same person you were able to help.  Certainly, the “you help me and then I’ll help you” approach is one doomed to failure.

In short, when networking in any form, remember you are primarily there to meet people – be friendly, polite, and above all, open-minded.  The person you snub now may prove to be someone you wish had reached out to later.

For a great book on networking, read Andy Lopata’s “…and Death Came Third! The Definitive Guide to Networking and Public Speaking”, which received global kudos and reached no. 2 on Amazon.co.uk when it was launched.  He also has a blog, which can be found at http://networkingandreferrals.blogspot.com/

It is also very likely that there will be more blog articles based around this subject, so keep your eyes open!
